October update: Constitutional Celebration

October 18, 2012

This has been a very busy month.

Along with teaching as an Artist/Teacher in Residence for the Center For World Music, playing for ballet classes, and reviewing concerts, I am also in the process of arranging several previous original musical scores for collaboration with area musicians.

In addition, I have been participating  in the 2012 Constitutional Literacy Celebration at our San Diego Central Library. This year, September 17th marked the two hundred twenty fifth year of our U.S. Constitution’s signing.

Reg E. Gaines and I read the U.S. Constitution with Dr. Isidro Ortiz and Dr. Pat Washington as guest scholar commentators on the anniversary date.  A most gracious performer and creative powerhouse, Reg E. Gaines’ presence was inspiring. In the shadow of such a master lyricist, I followed his lead. The game plan was to render the Constitution and Bill of Rights with intensely personal, emotional flavah. The forefathers were in all probability not dispassionately pontificating as it was written. It was shaped in a chaotic revolutionary social-political climate.

Musician, poet, director, educator Gaines has not lost his edge since “Bring In da noise, Bring In da Funk.”

One of my favorite hip hop generation educational videos by Gaines is:

The very next week,  I  started a four week performance reading run of landmark Supreme Court case reading/reviews.  Last Tuesday evening (October 17)was the finale court reading: New Jersey v TLO which helped to determine usage of Reasonable Suspicion for teachers and administrators to search student backpacks, purses, etc. It also opened the door for metal detector use at entrances and exits from school sites.

Thank you all for your patience and for still sending questions and comments. I have been reading them and am in the process of responding. Check for new postings in the next week. Real time performance are exciting, but must admit — good to be be sharing in electronic community again.

It has indeed been a very busy month.
